Leaving the beautiful wax palm valley was made less difficult by finding 3 slugs climbing around on the walls and floors of our hostal the last morning. Now there is a vocab word I definitely didn't think I'd need to know!
Another long bus ride to Popayan as we work out way towards Ecuador. This one was made excruciating by my poor choice not to go to the bathroom before we got on. All the other long distance buses have had nice toilets in the back and I even checked and saw one. However, after takeoff, when I went to use it, I was dismayed to find a luggage closet instead. We had taken special care to get an express bus and the first stop was 4 hours down a bumpy road! Que pena!
We had a great day yesterday bussing up into the mountains to a small town that has a Tuesday market where many of the indigenous Guambiano come to sell and buy in their colorful outfits. There is something beautiful and heartwarming about a man in a bright blue skirt with pink trim, boots and a bowler hat!
We-re tackling bicycles again today so stay tuned!
Love, Dana
I remember folks on the long-haul buses in Ecuador NOT wanting the windows open---something about the spirits. And passing plastic bags of freshly donated urine up to the front for communal disposal. No need to have on-board bathrooms or slow the trip with stops. Now that would have solved your problem. Anxious to see photos of all the colorful outfits.
